A typical sleep is composed of periods of 90-min cycles divided into periods of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Recent recommendations suggest that athletes should obtain 9-10 h of total sleep to cope with the increased need for recovery. To date\, the studies which have used objective (e.g.\, actigraphy) sleep measures (time in bed\, wake-up time\, total time in bed\, total sleep time\, sleep efficiency\, and wakes after sleep onset) suggest that athletes receive less sleep quantity than recommended. Besides the inadequate sleep duration\, they present poor sleep efficiency and increased number of awakenings during the night. Training schedule and increased training load appear to be crucial factors jeopardizing the sleep of athletes participating in aquatic sports. In fact\, training schedules requiring early morning trainings (<6 a.m.) and increased training volume and/or intensity have been linked with poor sleep\, decreased subjective recovery the following day and likely with reduced endurance performance. In this direction\, a growing number of studies in general and athletic population have shown that sleep deficit is associated with immunosuppression and increased risk of illness. Based on the abovementioned research findings\, aquatic sports athletes and the coaching staff should be aware of the adverse effects of sleep loss on recovery and performance. The adoption of effective sleep strategies is necessary for the improvement of wellbeing\, performance\, and overall health of the athletes. \n  \nTraining load evaluation for performance enhancement in aquatic sports \nAthletes in aquatic sports participate in daily in-water training that induces substantial psychobiological load. The last is manipulated by the coach and considering the advice and support of the scientific staff. The external load planned for each athlete can be easily evaluated\, however\, the estimation of the individual internal load requires specific knowledge. In this context\, the continuous heart rate recordings\, the blood lactate concentration and the use of specifically designed sensors may be used for the quantification of the individual internal load. Additional information may be gained by recording the well-being status and sleep quality of the athletes. Besides this information\, the product of the rating of perceived exertion with the training duration may be easily used in all aquatic sports for internal training load estimation. A systematic recording and subsequent control of training load is critical for the planning appropriate variation and periodization of the training stimulus during a mesocyle\, or longer training periods. This information helps in the achievement of the best performance on a specific period of the year\, while preventing occurrence of any immune system dysfunction or injury. Increased training load 4-8 weeks and an appropriate decrement 2-3 weeks prior to the main competition seem to be successful for competitive swimmers. A similar approach may be used for water polo players before internation tournaments with a duration of 2-3 weeks. A systematic recording of the training load and the appropriate modifications are decisive for a successful performance in important competitions. \n  \nConcurrent swimming and dryland resistance training for competitive swimmers   \nDryland resistance training is routinely applied by swimmers aiming to increase their propulsive force and swimming performance. Swimmers usually apply dryland training such as maximum strength (≥90% of 1 repetition maximum) or strength endurance (40-60% of 1 repetition maximum) 15 to 40 min prior to swimming training (endurance or maximum intensity training). Dryland maximum strength training that performed 30 min prior to endurance swimming training did not affect swimmers’ speed during 5×400-m swimming repetitions or the tethered swimming force compared to control condition (no dryland training). However\, decrements in stroke length and increments in stroke rate was observed during the 5×400-m endurance training set. A dryland strength endurance training 20 min prior to maximum intensity swimming training reduced performance during sets of maximum swimming efforts (8×25-m\, 4×50-m). Interestingly a maximum strength training did not affected performance in the same maximum intensity efforts. Despite the limitations of the training sessions sequence applied in a daily training\, most swimmers regularly perform dryland and swimming training concurrently for a period of 6 to 12 weeks. It has been reported that swimmers’ performance was improved in distances of 50 to 400-m and maximum strength was increased following 6 to 12 weeks of concurrent swimming and dryland training. Swimmers may apply dryland strength endurance training following a maximum intensity swimming training or separate these sessions in different days to avoid acute performance decrements in sprint swimming performance. Nevertheless\, a long-term concurrent application of dryland resistance training and swimming training on the same training unit seem to improve swimmers’ performance. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nEvaluation of swimming technique \nEffective technique is a determining factor not only for achieving high performance and maximizing physical abilities\, but also for avoiding injuries. Especially in swimming\, technique becomes even more important\, as due to the high density of the water\, the consequences of even small technical errors are magnified. Swimming propulsion is based on the relationship of propulsive and resistive forces which is reflected in the velocity of the body’s center of mass (CM). Because for the determination of the CM’s velocity expensive equipment and sophisticated computational procedures are required\, hip velocity can be used as an alternative. When the hip velocity increases it means that the propulsive forces predominate\, while when it decreases it means that the resistive forces predominate. By recording the swimmers’ movement with high-frequency underwater and aerial cameras\, and then digitizing with specific software selected points on the body (e.g. hip\, knee\, ankle\, etc.)\, it is possible to determine both hip velocity and the movement of joints and body parts and to detect possible technical mistakes\, providing the necessary feedback to the swimmers and their coaches. The evaluation can concern both the swimming styles\, as well as the corresponding starts and turns\, where the speed of the underwater dolphins or the individual underwater phases is of particular importance.

His primary research interests focus on the study of exercise programs for healthy and clinical populations\, and has authored over 90 international peer-reviewed publications on exercise\, including research articles and textbook chapters\, and has been the editor for 3 international books. His work has more than 1650 citations with an h-index of 24. He has also earned 20 professional credentials through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)\, the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA)\, the American Council on Exercise\, and the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). He has many years of experience as an educator teaching exercise science-related courses in private Vocational Education and Training Institutes and Lifelong Learning Centers\, while he has been an adjunct professor in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science and the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Thessaly as well as the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science at the Democritus University of Thrace. He also teaches as an invited speaker of the International Obesity Exercise Training Institute (IOETI) in over 45 countries across five continents. Also\, he is an ACSM Fellow and has been serving on several ACSM and NSCA Committees. Lastly\, he received global recognition as the 2018 IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year\, 2019 IDEA China Fitness Innovator\, 2020 NSCA Personal Trainer of the Year\, 2021 PFP Trainer of the Year\, and 2022 ACSM Certified Professional of the Year. \n

The goals of treatment are to induce and maintain remission. There are several therapeutic options available for these patients\, and the role of the treating physician is to select the most appropriate therapy for each individual patient. Nevertheless\, as chronic inflammatory conditions\, IBDs are associated with increased rates of disability\, both physical and psychological\, causing serious functional problems for patients. These issues are often overlooked by the treating physician and require collaboration with other specialties for proper management. This lecture summarizes evidence on the health benefits of exercise\, providing guidelines for physical activity in both the general population and in populations with chronic inflammatory disorders. In recent decades\, a large body of scientific evidence has confirmed the beneficial role of exercise as a modifiable risk factor in various chronic diseases (cardiovascular diseases\, diabetes mellitus\, cancer\, etc.). The prevalence of risk factors for cardiovascular disease in Greece is particularly high\, which reinforces the need for targeted prevention and intervention strategies at national and local levels. Educating the public on healthy eating and physical activity\, promoting public health policies that will reduce risk factors\, and improving access to health services for early diagnosis and treatment are strategies that can contribute to reducing risk factors for cardiovascular disease and improving the quality of life of citizens. \n  \nAssessment of risk factors from childhood \nKonstantinos Volaklis\, Sport & Exercise Physiologist\, Heart Rehabilitation Center\, Cardio Clinic Augsburg / Center of Cardiac Prevention & Sports Medicine\, Medical School\, Technological University of Munich \nBased on the recent strategies of primary prevention\, the assessment of cardiovascular risk factors should be carried out relatively early\, already in childhood\, in order to significantly reduce the relative risk of cardiovascular disease. Important\, among others\, is the assessment of obesity indicators the measurement of blood pressure as well as the evaluation of physical activity levels\, smoking habits and lipid profile. Based on relevant research\, the early identification and treatment of cardiovascular risk factors significantly reduces the likelihood of disease occurrence and the resulting mortality. \n  \n  \n  \nClinical Specifics in the Management of Type I Diabetes Mellitus  \nEvgenia Vlachou\, Professor of the Department of Obstetrics of the School of Health and Welfare Sciences of the University of West Attica \nType 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the pancreatic beta cells responsible for insulin production are destroyed. The lack of insulin leads to hyperglycemia and necessitates lifelong insulin therapy. Its management involves several clinical particularities\, distinct from those of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus\, and requires continuous\, multifaceted\, and personalized care that combines insulin therapy\, ongoing education\, technological tools\, and psychosocial support. Although obesity has traditionally been associated more with Type 2 Diabetes\, in recent years it has increasingly been recognized as a significant aggravating factor in Type 1 Diabetes as well. The presence of obesity in individuals with T1DM can further complicate glycemic control\, increase insulin resistance\, and necessitate adjustments in insulin therapy. Moreover\, it heightens the risk of cardiometabolic complications\, adding to the already complex nature of the disease. Therefore\, managing T1DM in combination with obesity requires an even more intensive and individualized approach\, taking into account both glycemic needs and the factors that influence body weight\, diet\, and physical activity. \n  \nThe Importance of Physical Exercise in the Perioperative Management of Morbid Obesity \nIlias Sdralis\, General Surgeon\, Director of the Morbid Obesity & Metabolic Diseases Surgery Clinic\, Inter-Balkan Medical Center of Thessaloniki \nBariatric and metabolic surgery is one of the most effective interventions in the treatment of morbid obesity and related metabolic disorders. However\, its long-term success depends largely on the adoption of a comprehensive therapeutic framework that includes lifestyle changes\, with physical exercise playing a key role in both preoperative preparation and postoperative rehabilitation. \nPre-operative Physical Activity: The implementation of physical activity before surgery has multiple benefits for the patient: \n\nImprovement of cardiorespiratory fitness\, which reduces the risk of complications during anesthesia and surgery.\nIncrease in muscle mass and basal metabolism\, which enhances postoperative recovery.\nReduction of the inflammatory state of the body\, which is associated with a better postoperative course.\nPsychological preparation and strengthening of adherence to the treatment plan.\n\nPhysical activity in this phase may include gentle aerobic exercise (such as walking or cycling)\, flexibility exercises\, and light strengthening programs aimed at improving functionality and fitness. \n  \nPost-operative Physical Exercise: Incorporating exercise into the postoperative plan is crucial for: \n\nMaintaining weight loss and avoiding weight regain.\nPreventing loss of lean mass\, which can occur due to rapid weight loss.\nImproving glycemic control\, especially in patients with pre-existing type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance.\nImproving mobility\, functional capacity\, and quality of life.\nEnhancing mental well-being\, by reducing stress levels and enhancing self-esteem.\n\nExercise should be progressive and individualized\, considering the healing phase\, physical condition and capabilities of each patient. The goal is to gradually transition from light physical activity to regular participation in organized exercise programs. \n  \nIntegrated Therapeutic Approach: Bariatric surgery\, when accompanied by systematic physical exercise\, is not simply a method of weight loss\, but acts as a starting point for a radical change in the patient’s metabolic and functional profile. Maintaining positive results depends largely on the integration of physical activity into everyday life\, as an integral part of a new\, healthy lifestyle.

Based on recent scientific data\, maintaining a good postoperative outcome requires interdisciplinary follow-up of the patient after surgery in order to sustain weight loss and reduce the risk of lean body mass loss. The dietary guidelines provided to patients\, as well as the exercise instructions and protocols applied both pre- and post-operatively\, will be presented and discussed. Particular emphasis is also placed on the distinction between compliance and adherence to therapeutic recommendations\, as adherence does not involve the passive acceptance of instructions but rather the active participation of the individual with obesity in decision-making\, the co-creation of achievable goals\, and the joint agreement on an intervention plan that reflects their needs\, capacities\, and priorities. From this perspective\, the therapeutic alliance is substantially strengthened\, creating more favorable conditions for the long-term maintenance of lifestyle changes. In this light\, it is argued that an interdisciplinary\, rather than merely multidisciplinary team\, constitutes the most appropriate and effective approach for the management of morbid obesity. \n  \n

In 2018\, she was awarded her PhD in Psychology from the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom. She is a psychotherapist specialized in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Additionally\, she has participated in the postgraduate program in Nutritional Psychology and is a Master Practitioner in Eating Disorders and Obesity\, certified by the Center for Education and Treatment of Eating Disorders (KEADD)\, in collaboration with the National Centre for Eating Disorders (NCFED)\, UK. Currently\, she collaborates with the Psychologist at the Department of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders at the Inter-Balkan Medical Center of Thessaloniki. In addition\, she is a research fellow at the Network Ageing Research of Heidelberg University and at Ain Shams University Hospital in Cairo. She has published more than 50 articles in international scientific journals and has presented over 70 papers at international and European conferences. \n  \nVasileios Xyrafopoulos is an Exercise Specialist and Scientific Associate at the Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Clinic of the Inter-Balkan Medical Center of Thessaloniki. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Sport Science from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a Master of Science in Clinical Exercise and Applications of Technology in Health\, a joint program of the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science of the School of Physical Education\, Sport Science and Occupational Therapy of Democritus University of Thrace in collaboration with the National Center for Science Research “DEMOKRITOS” – The Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications (IIT). His professional expertise focuses on the design\, implementation\, and evaluation of individualized exercise programs for individuals with metabolic\, musculoskeletal\, and other chronic conditions. He has extensive experience in weight management through targeted physical activity and has collaborated with private fitness centers\, sports clubs\, and academic institutions in Greece and abroad. He has presented scientific work and delivered lectures at conferences in the fields of physical education\, clinical exercise\, and fitness across Europe\, contributing to the dissemination of evidence-based knowledge in exercise and health sciences. His scientific and clinical interests are centered on the personalized adaptation of exercise for prevention\, rehabilitation\, and quality-of-life enhancement. The ultimate objective remains the enhancement of Human-AI teaming\, where technology augments rather than replaces the practitioner’s critical judgment. \n  \nIoannis Kansizoglou\, Assistant Professor at the Department of Occupational Therapy\, School of Physical Education\, Sport Science and Occupational Therapy\, Democritus University of Thrace \nChristos Kokkotis\, Assistant Professor at the Department of Occupational Therapy\, School of Physical Education\, Sport Science and Occupational Therapy\, Democritus University of Thrace \n  \nSpeakers CV’s  \nGeorge Panagiotou is an academic at the rank of Associate Professor and serves as Coordinator of the Exercise\, Health and Human Performance Laboratory as well as the Master’s Programme in Applied Sport Science at the Department of Life Sciences\, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences\, European University Cyprus. He specializes in the assessment and analysis of athletic performance in football and in high-performance sport more broadly. Over the past 20 years\, he has collaborated with numerous football clubs in Cyprus and abroad. He has served as Exercise Physiologist and Director of Medical and Scientific Staff at AEL Limassol (2008–2014) and at AC Omonia Nicosia (2018–2019). \nIoannis Kansizoglou is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Occupational Therapy\, School of Physical Education\, Sport Science and Occupational Therapy\, Democritus University of Thrace. He received his Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2017 and his Ph.D. in deep representation learning and affective computing from the Laboratory of Robotics and Automation\, DUTH\, in 2021. He has previously served as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the same laboratory\, contributing to projects funded by the European Commission and the Greek Government. His research interests include assistive technologies\, affective computing\, human–computer interaction\, and robotics. \nChristos Kokkotis is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Occupational Therapy\, School of Physical Education\, Sport Science and Occupational Therapy\, Democritus University of Thrace. He holds a PhD in Machine Learning applications in Quality of Life from the University of Thessaly. His research focuses on motion analysis\, time-series data\, and the development of machine learning and deep learning models in healthcare and rehabilitation. He has worked on applications including knee osteoarthritis prediction\, stroke recovery\, and ACL rehabilitation monitoring. He has also contributed to research projects at CERTH within the OActive and SafeACL programs. Dr. Kokkotis is actively involved in Horizon-funded projects and his work aims to bridge AI and clinical practice through interpretable and data-driven solutions.
