SUMMARY:Traditional or Hybrid High-Intensity Interval Training for Individuals with Overweight and Obesity in the Gym?
DESCRIPTION:  \n10th Thematic Seminar of the Postgraduate Program: “Clinical Exercise and Applications of Technology in Health” \nDepartment of Physical Education and Sport Science of the School of Physical Education and Sport Science of Democritus University of Thrace in collaboration with the National Center for Science Research “DEMOKRITOS” – The Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications (IIT) \n  \nTraditional or Hybrid High-Intensity Interval Training \nfor Individuals with Overweight and Obesity in the Gym? \n  \nWorkshop Director: Helen Douda\, Professor D.P.E.S.S. – D.U.Th. \nDirector of the Postgraduate Program “Clinical Exercise and Applications of Technology in Health” \n  \nCoordinator: Styliani Karakiriou\, Specialized Teaching Staff D.P.E.S.S. – D.U.Th. \n  \nDescription \nInterval training has been considered a feasible and effective training modality for individuals struggling with overweight or obesity. However\, such a demanding exercise option has been very well studied mostly through traditional\, single-component training interventions. On the other side\, hybrid-type\, multicomponent interval training programs are very popular in the health and fitness industry\, but such nontraditional training regimens have not been widely investigated among populations with an unhealthy weight. This seminar presents all the latest research findings of hybrid-type interval training protocols in people with overweight and obesity. Recent evidence suggests that a multicomponent exercise approach incorporating bodyweight drills and functional resistance-based training tools performed under real-world conditions may induce beneficial alterations in various health and fitness indices in previously inactive adults with overweight and obesity. In the practical part\, suggested exercises and comprehensive training programs will be presented\, respecting the high body mass index\, poor functional capacity\, limited range of motion in all joints\, reduced mobility\, and several physical limitations significantly affecting performance in activities of daily living and quality of life among these populations. \n  \nSECTION Ι:   Theoretical Approach \n14:00 – 15:15 \nBasic terms\, theoretical background and program design. \nBreak \n  \nSECTION II: Practical Approach \n15:30 – 17:00 \n\na) Exercise techniques\nb) Practical application\nc) Discussion and Q&A \n\n  \nWorkshop Instructor: \nDr. Alexios Batrakoulis\, PhD\, CSCS\, ACSM-EP\, FACSM\, Adjunct Professor D.P.E.S.S. – D.U.Th. \n  \nDr. Alexios Batrakoulis has been involved in the health and fitness industry since 1995\, and holds a B.Sc. in Physical Education and Sports Science with an emphasis in fitness\, an M.Sc. in Exercise and Health with an emphasis in exercise and obesity\, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Exercise Physiology with an emphasis in exercise and obesity. His primary research interests focus on the study of hybrid-type\, multicomponent interval training in obesity\, and has authored over 65 international peer-reviewed publications on exercise\, including research articles and textbook chapters\, and has been the editor for 3 international books. His work has more than 950 citations with an h-index of 17. He has also earned 20 professional credentials through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)\, the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA)\, the American Council on Exercise\, and the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). He has many years of experience as an educator teaching exercise science-related courses in private Vocational Education and Training Institutes and Lifelong Learning Centers\, while he has been an adjunct professor in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science and the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Thessaly as well as the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science at the Democritus University of Thrace. He also teaches as an invited speaker of the International Obesity Exercise Training Institute (IOETI) in over 45 countries across five continents. Also\, he is an ACSM Fellow and has been serving on several ACSM and NSCA Committees. Lastly\, he received global recognition as the 2018 IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year\, 2019 IDEA China Fitness Innovator\, 2020 NSCA Personal Trainer of the Year\, 2021 PFP Trainer of the Year\, and 2022 ACSM Certified Professional of the Year. \n  \nDate:                           Friday 31/05/2024 \nTime:                                    14:00 – 17:00 \nVenue:                                 University Gym “Alexandros Karypidis” \nWorkshop fee:                  20€

Regular exercise is known to prevent cardiovascular disease\, but in rare cases\, it is intimately related to sudden death due to unknown underlying heart diseases. It is also well known\, that most of these events can be prevented by optimizing the pre-participation screening. The purpose of this Round Table is to highlight the scientific data related to the frequency of occurrence and the causes of sudden death in sports and to highlight the preventive measures that must be adopted so that we do not become part of such events in the professional sports areas. \n  \nThe roundtable is implemented in the context of the scientific activities of the Inter-Institutional Graduate Program: “Clinical Practice and Applications of Technology in Health” in collaboration with the T.E.F.A.A. Student Association “Spyros Louis” and is dedicated to the memory of the student Georgia Solanaki\, who unexpectedly left us a year ago during her daily training. \n  \nNOTE: The Round Table is supported by the participation of the “Association of Cardiovascular Patients Promoting the Support\, Rehabilitation and Prevention of Heart Disease in the Prefecture of Rodopi” \n
