Considering that the prevalence of metabolic syndrome is systematically increasing worldwide\, personal trainers and exercise physiologists working in a real-world gym setting need to address several physiological and psychological factors associated with this health condition. Thus\, simple assessments\, smart warm-up drills\, fitness games\, partner exercises\, progressions and modifications for all primal movements\, coaching and cueing techniques will be presented aiming to blend science and application through an interactive case study. The aim of this seminar is the integration of science-based information and hands-on coaching skills for previously inactive individuals with metabolic syndrome\, supporting health and fitness professionals to apply customized and effective communication and exercise training strategies in clients demonstrating impaired glucose and lipid metabolism\, raised blood pressure and visceral obesity. \nSECTION Ι: Theoretical Approach \n14:00 – 15:15 \nBasic terms\, theoretical background and program design. \n15:15 – 15:30 Break \nSECTION II: Practical Approach \n15:30 – 17:00 \n\na) Case study\nb) Assessment methods\nc) Exercise techniques\nd) Practical application\ne) Discussion and Q&A \n\n  \nWorkshop Instructor: Dr. Alexios Batrakoulis\, PhD\, CSCS\, ACSM-EP\, FACSM\, Adjunct Professor D.P.E.S.S. – D.U.Th. \nDr. Alexios Batrakoulis has been involved in the health and fitness industry since 1995\, and holds a B.Sc. in Physical Education and Sports Science with an emphasis in fitness\, an M.Sc. in Exercise and Health with an emphasis in exercise and obesity\, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Exercise Physiology with an emphasis in exercise and obesity. His primary research interests focus on the study of exercise programs for healthy and clinical populations\, and has authored over 90 international peer-reviewed publications on exercise\, including research articles and textbook chapters\, and has been the editor for 3 international books. SUMMARY:Exercise and Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Latest data and practical advice for proper symptom management
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nInter-Institutional Postgraduate Program: “Clinical Exercise and Applications of Technology in Health” \nDepartment of Physical Education and Sport Science of the School of Physical Education and Sport Science of Democritus University of Thrace in collaboration with the National Center for Science Research “DEMOKRITOS” – The Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications (IIT) \nAssociation of Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases of Thrace \n  \nROUND TABLE \nExercise and Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Latest data and practical advice for proper symptom management \n  \nFriday\, May 23\, 2025 \n18:00 – 19:30 \n“Georgios Papadriellis” Amphitheatre \n  \nChair: \nHelen Douda\, Professor\, D.P.E.S.S.\, Democritus University of Thrace \nDirector of the Inter-institutional Postgraduate Program: “Clinical Exercise and Applications of Technology in Health” \nedouda@phyed.duth.gr \n  \nApostolos  Spassis\,  Specialized Teaching Staff D.P.E.S.S. – D.U.Th. aspassis@phyed.duth.gr \n  \nAbstract \nInflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the intestine that may be caused by microbes or parasites\, stress\, or other factors. The aim of this round table is to present the latest data on the disease\, highlight the beneficial effects of physical exercise for patients\, and provide practical advice for proper symptom management\, with the goal of improving patients’ quality of life. \nSpeakers: \nStergios Vradelis\, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the Department of Medicine in Alexandroupolis\, Democritus University of Thrace\, and Consultant Gastroenterologist at the 2nd University Clinic of DUTh. \nTherapeutic options (limitations and possibilities) in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) \nAbstract: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. These are two autoimmune conditions characterized by periods of flare-ups and remission\, and their incidence has increased significantly in recent years. The goals of treatment are to induce and maintain remission. There are several therapeutic options available for these patients\, and the role of the treating physician is to select the most appropriate therapy for each individual patient. This represents the essence of personalized medicine. \n  \nMichail Spathakis\, Internist at the University General Hospital of Alexandroupolis \nDisability in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) \nAbstract: Advances in the treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) over the past decade have brought about dramatic changes in their management\, significantly improving patients’ quality of life. Nevertheless\, as chronic inflammatory conditions\, IBDs are associated with increased rates of disability\, both physical and psychological\, causing serious functional problems for patients. These issues are often overlooked by the treating physician and require collaboration with other specialties for proper management. The aim of this presentation is to highlight these problems and discuss practical advice for addressing them. \n  \nApostolos Spasis\, Specialized Teaching Staff D.P.E.S.S. – D.U.Th. \nExercise in patients with IBD: Get moving and manage the disease \nAbstract: There is limited knowledge regarding exercise and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Moreover\, the importance of regular physical activity for the optimal management of IBD has not been sufficiently addressed in clinical guidelines and is often overlooked by healthcare professionals. This lecture summarizes evidence on the health benefits of exercise\, providing guidelines for physical activity in both the general population and in populations with chronic inflammatory disorders. In recent decades\, a large body of scientific evidence has confirmed the beneficial role of exercise as a modifiable risk factor in various chronic diseases (cardiovascular diseases\, diabetes mellitus\, cancer\, etc.). However\, recent research also highlights the significant role of physical inactivity as a modifiable factor\, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the immune system against autoimmune diseases. \n  \nSpeakers: \nThrace Association of Patients with IBD\, participation of members \nCommenting on developments\, strengthening the patients’ voice \nComments\, opinions\, suggestions \n
